Murdered: Yakini Williams

*Editor’s Note: Once again, another story I had not heard of until today. The person who sent me this story said that both Yakini and a young (white) lady named Lauren Burk was also murdered around the same time as Yakini..and in a similar fashion. This is not in ANY way to take away from Lauren’s death because murder is murder, no matter the color of your skin. However, I remember Ms. Burk’s story being broadcast on EVERY STATION in Atlanta when it happened…and even in North Carolina (my mom asked me did I know her) but yet…I can’t recall hearing a THING about Yakini Williams. Hmm…go figure. Both of these tragedies ALSO happened around the same time that another young lady who was student body president at UNC Chapel Hill was killed. Her name was Eve Carson. Again, not taking ANYTHING away from Ms. Carson…but I heard about this story SEVERAL TIMES OVER in Atlanta, Georgia…and I STILL can’t seem to remember even ONE news story being posted about Yakini Williams. I have to laugh at myself a little on this one because as I told you all in previous posts, BEFORE I POST ANYTHING, I always google to learn more so I don’t sound like an uninformed jerk. So when I read this story, I immediately hit up my favorite search engines to read more about Ms. Williams and…well, would you all be surprised if I told you that I BARELY found anything? Yet, there are pages beyond PAGES of stories on BOTH Lauren Burk & Eve Carson, who both died around the SAME time as Yakini and in the same freakin’ way? Now do you guys feel me???

The Hinds County Coroner identifies a Jackson woman who’s partially burned body was found in a ditch. 21-year-old Yakini Williams was found after noon Wednesday in a ditch off John Hopkins Road. The coroner says Williams had been shot four times, three times in the head. A man walking his dogs in the area found her partially clothed and called police.

*Editor’s Note: My good & beautiful friend, Kase, was telling me about this story. This is “The Saint,” a well known rapper in Chicago who was brutally gunned down by the police. There are several accounts of what happened, but what struck me the most was the fact that #1. he was struck SEVERAL times in the back with his hands up and #2. anytime something happens regarding a black men, they (meaning the media) always have to say “prison..gang affiliation…drugs.” I didn’t know this young man personally but its ridiculous that parents…black parents…are usually required to grieve a minimum of THREE times in the death of one child. Of course, the first grieving process comes in the actual loss of their child. The second one comes in the fact that they can barely get any [media] coverage for their children but if they ARE so lucky then it’d lead to the third grieving process…having their child maliciously dragged through the dirt when the main thing that matters is that SOMEONE senselessly LOST THEIR LIFE! Are we that shallow and air-headed that we pay more attention to the ‘what was’ rather than the ‘what is?’ PNE never will be…..

pA man who was fatally shot by Chicago police officers late Tuesday after being pulled over for a traffic violation on the West Side has been identified.
Freddie Latrice Wilson, 34, of the 1600 block of South Homan Avenue, was fatally shot by police at 16 N. Lorel Ave. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 11:20 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
The incident occurred about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday on North Lorel Avenue just north of Madison Street in the Austin neighborhood, according to Ilana Rosenzweig, Chief Administrator of the Independent Police Review Authority, the new name for the police Office of Professional Standards.
Wilson was driving a Cadillac when he was pulled over for a traffic violation by two squad cars, with two uniformed police officers inside each one, Rozenzweig said.
Three of the officers discharged their weapons at Wilson, Rosenzweig said. No one else was in the Cadillac. Rosenzweig said a weapon was recovered on the scene, but it was unknown whether the driver of the Cadillac used the weapon.
Details of exactly why the officers shot the man and what traffic violation occurred were under investigation, she said.
The scene of the shooting was still being processed as of 1:30 a.m. Wednesday and statements from the officers involved and witnesses were still being taken, she said.

DeKalb County officials said Thursday that they had charged a man in the disappearance of a woman from her apartment off Roxboro Road in July.
Jasper Keels, 24, of Decatur has been charged with kidnapping in connection with the disappearance of Monica Bowie. Bowie was reportedly abducted from the Berkshires of Lenox apartment complex in early July. Witnesses said they had heard a woman screaming, then saw a burgundy car speeding away.
Bowie’s burgundy 2002 Mercury Sable was found burned in southwest Atlanta a few days later. Keels was arrested at that point and charged with theft-by-taking, but was not charged with Bowie’s kidnapping until this week.
Keels has been in the DeKalb County Jail since that point on the earlier charges.
“We have not established the whereabouts of Ms. Bowie, but we suspect she has met with foul play,” said DeKalb County Police Lt. Tim Hunt.
Police said they believe the arrest is the first of many in Bowie’s disappearance.
“The motive behind this kidnapping is believed to be illegal narcotics activity,” said Hunt. “We have not established that Mr. Keels knew Ms. Bowie.”
Police won’t say if the motive is related to Bowie’s June arrest on weapons charges. After she went missing, friends searched neighborhoods, including her mother, who flew down from Pittsburgh, Pa.
Bowie’s lawyer said that her mother is pleased by the case’s progress.
“She is excited about the things that are going on in this case,” said attorney Gerald Griggs. “We’re happy that there has been someone charged. We don’t want to jump to judgment. We just hope this case will come to a complete resolution and that Monica will be safely returned.”
Police are looking for help from the public, and they said they anticipate making more arrests

COVINGTON, Ga. (AP) — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the death of a 28-year-old Newton County man whose mother found him dead at their home in Covington.
GBI spokesman John Bankhead says the woman found the body of 28-year-old Gary Lamar Jones around 11 p.m. Sunday when she returned home from work.
Bankhead says the death was a homicide, but he declined to say how Jones was killed. An autopsy was done Monday, but the GBI is not releasing the results.
Jones worked at the Red Lobster restaurant in Conyers.
Bankhead said Jones also worked for a brief time for the Georgia Department of Corrections as a prison guard. He says Jones had resigned from that job last month.
The Newton County Sheriff’s Office is assisting the GBI with the investigation.

PhotobucketThe woman wanted in a deadly shooting in Cape Girardeau remains on the run Monday morning.
The search continues for 29-year-old murder suspect Tambra Turner. Police consider her armed and dangerous. She’s wanted for Friday’s fatal shooting in Cape Girardeau.
Police say Chabreshea “Brie” Egson, 20, was gunned down at her home on North Spanish Street. Crews removed Egson on a stretcher from the home. Police say she died a short time later at the hospital.
According to the probable cause statement, two other people lived in the house along with Egson. One was Lloyd Gilmore. Investigators learned that Tambra Turner is Gilmore’s estranged wife.
The Cape Girardeau and Bollinger County Major Case Squad has been activated. About 28 officers are working this case.
Even with no one in custody, police don’t think there’s a public safety concern.
“We don’t think there’s someone randomly going around and shooting people, but obviously when you have someone who’s committed a crime like this they should be considered dangerous and armed,” said Sgt. Baris Hovis with the Cape Girardeau Police Department.
This is the second shooting in Cape Girardeau in eight days. Police say it’s rare and neighbors call it unnerving.
Turner was originally wanted Friday after a call to police about eight hours before the shooting happened. Police say Turner apparently caused some property damage at the same house on Spanish Street about 9 p.m. Thursday. She’s now wanted for the Egson’s murder. Turner’s from the Sikeston area.
If you know where she is contact the Cape Girardeau Police Department (573) 332-0500

*Editor’s Note: Does anyone besides me watch the TV show entitledSnapped? If you aren’t familiar with it, allow me to give a recap. The premise of the show shows a happy man and woman…they usually live a decent to wealthy lifestyle, happy as heck without a trouble in the world. But something will happen that makes one person in the relationship “snap.” It could be the anticipation of insurance checks, jilted lovers who were cheated on or abused. Anything can bring on this snapping moment. This case reminds me of that. According to reports from various friends and family members, they didn’t see it coming. I guess it’s true when they say that you NEVER KNOW what’s going on behind someone else’s closed doors. I’m very curious…how do you from this to a mugshot?

PhotobucketAn intense manhunt came to a conclusion Thursday when a 19-year-old, who police say shot and killed his pregnant teenage girlfriend in her Fairfield home, was taken into custody.
Fairfield Police spokesman Al Bagos told KTVU that Antonio Williams’ mother brought him to police headquarters where he surrendered without incident at 9 a.m.
“The mother lived down the street (from the home where the fatal shooting took place),” Bagos said. “She came to the home last night and we told her of Antonio’s involvement…She brought him into the police station this morning.”
The capture ended a manhunt that began shortly after the fatal shooting.
“The boyfriend left in a hurry (after the fatal shooting),” Bagos said. “Arriving officers quickly set up a perimeter, but the suspect could not be located.”
Officers responded to an apartment in the 1200 block of Dana Drive at about 8 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting.
Shearell Dillon, 19, was found suffering a single gunshot wound to her chest. She was transported to NorthBay Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 11:09 p.m., according to authorities.
“The mother (Williams mother) said there was no indication of trouble,” Bagos said. “They were fine and laughing and having dinner together just the other night.”
Dillon was 16 weeks pregnant and lived at the apartment with her mother, two brothers and Williams, according to officers.
A preliminary investigation indicated Williams and the victim were in an upstairs bedroom in the apartment when witnesses reportedly heard a single gunshot ring out from that bedroom, according to officials.
Williams allegedly then walked out the front door, police said.

This is yet another story that truly breaks my heart. I’m always bothered by senseless acts of violence committed against ANYONE but those that are truly shooting for the stars and have a promising future ahead of them? It’s almost like you wish that you could save them so that they can continue materializing their dreams.

Jamiel Shaw was just three doors from his house on March 2. His father told the 17-year-old high school football star to be home before dark. That is exactly what he was trying to do when, just before dusk, gunshots rang out.
Gang members pulled up in a car and asked Shaw if he was in a gang. Shaw didn’t have time to tell them “no.” He was mowed down before he could answer, police say.
His dad heard the shots from inside his house and immediately called his son’s cell phone to warn him to stay away. But within seconds, the father realized what had happened.
“I just ran down there,” Jamiel Shaw Sr. told CNN
His son was wearing the same shirt his dad had pressed for him that morning. “He was laying on the ground and his face was so peaceful. I knew he was dead.”
“For three hours, I was just completely blacked out walking.”
More than 7,500 miles away, Army Sgt. Anita Shaw was serving her second tour in Iraq. Her commanding officer called her into his office and told her to sit down next to the chaplain. He then informed her that her son had been killed on the streets of Los Angeles.
“I freaked out,” she said. “I wanted to run out of the room. I was screaming and kicking. I was shouting, ‘No.’”
Anita Shaw is now back in Los Angeles to bury her son.

Brutally Attacked: LaTasha Shaw

*Editor’s Note: PRIME example of what I was talking about in the STOP SNITCHIN’ blog entry. How in the world does something this horrendous take place on a BUSY street, during ‘daytime’ hours but NOBODY knows anything? WAIT…I forgot. With the Stop Snitchin’ thing, people KNOW..they just don’t want to SHARE! I read this story in HORROR and its strongly encouraged that you all read it from TOP to bottom. It’s crazy how I played this WHOLE thing out in my head. And she died trying to find a SOLUTION to her daughter’s situation. This is really sad, people!
Original Article Found at Democrat & Chronicle
PhotobucketFour weeks ago, just after sunset on a Saturday night in the middle of a busy northwest city intersection, 36-year-old Latasha Shaw was brutally slain by a mob made up mostly of women and teenage girls.
Shaw’s case drew enormous public attention and outrage: A mother, seeking justice for her injured daughter, was beaten and stabbed to death in front of three generations of her own family as a crowd looked on.
Rumors arose that those onlookers did nothing, and Shaw’s case drew immediate comparison to that of Kitty Genovese, the young woman who was infamously murdered in Queens in 1964 as dozens of neighbors ignored her screams.
Shaw’s slaying on Sept. 29 helped prompt an around-the-clock police crackdown in city streets. But no arrests have been made. Rochester police say they know Shaw’s family and friends are frustrated that there have been no arrests, but they need time to sort through witness accounts and evidence to make sure that charges stick.
Police say they are vigorously investigating the case but provided few details.
“I think it happened so quickly and so viciously, in terms of the weapons used — she was attacked with sticks, hammers and knives — that I’m not sure how many citizens we have who could have stepped into a situation like that. Probably not very many,” said City Councilman Adam McFadden, who was not present that evening but has made Shaw’s case a personal crusade.
“I don’t get upset that there were people there who weren’t able to stop it,” he said, “because I don’t think there’s a manual for how to stop something like that.”

Editor’s Cogitations: Stop Snitchin’

Posted in CrimeProject New EraRidiculousness on April 3, 2008 by projectnewera
Photobucket
Going through many of the articles related to abduction, assault, or even murder, I’m noticing a trend.
In a lot of the stories that I’ve posted (and even in those that I’ve YET to post), there is an alarming number of instances where there are many witnesses to a specific crime, yet no one chooses to come forward.
Can somebody help me understand that? I think that we all need to be filled in on that one.
Growing up, my parents always reminded me that “nobody likes a tattletale…unless someone is bothering your no no areas.” But did many of you really carry that lesson in tattling into your adult life? Is this a lesson that was taken so seriously that we have forgotten about helping out our fellow mankind?
It bothers me that so many of these cases DO indeed have an ending but those endings are never realized because of some silly code of the streets. I’ve never been privy to a crime…maybe thats why I don’t really understand. But if I were, I’d strongly consider everything. What if this was my mother? Father? Sibling? Friend? Wouldn’t I want someone to tell?
I remember several years ago when the “Stop Snitchin” tees were on sale. The first time I saw it, I just thought it was another name brand started by some hip hop star. But then I watched some ignorant guy on television explaining exactly what the stop snitching campaign was all about and the only thing I could say was “Are you serious!? People really wouldn’t tell if they witnessed a crime?” How awful. If something were to ever happen to me, these are the types of people that I would NOT like to be around!
Nonetheless, I am not suggesting that any of the readers of this blog wouldn’t tell. I’m just putting out the message that it is okay to. Please..don’t tell me that because I’m not in or from ‘da hood’ that I couldn’t understand. What I DON’T understand is that there are SEVERAL unresolved crimes against black men, women and children taking place that have SOME resolution, some sense of closure…but SOMEBODY out there is unwilling to offer it.
Whether you’re from the hood or not, surely somebody can offer some explanation as to WHY this phenomenon is so popular and why it seems more important to ‘keep it G‘ than to free your conscience…and maybe offer a grieving family some chance at peace through your cooperation?
Riddle me that….

*Editor’s Note: Yet another unsolved murder. You know what KILLS me? In an effort to try and ‘sweep it under the rug,’ police officials/detectives will say that its possibly “gang related” or that the child “lives with one parent.” What difference does THAT make? If a person is murdered and a killer is still on the loose, everyone deserves to know. Your socio-economic background, racial group or shoe size matters not. What DOES matter is that a life was lost…a child will not have the opportunity to explore the ‘could bes’ all because somebody SOMEWHERE had to prove a point. April 1st, 2008 marks the one year anniversary of Terrance’s death and STILL not suspects? Somebody needs to “snitch.”
Original Article Found at Cleveland Blogs
There will be a vigil this evening for slain Terrance Allen, 13.
He was killed a year ago. The case remains unsolved.
His family and friends and the Task Force For Community Mobilization will gather at 5:30 p.m. at East 79th Street and Superior Avenue, where he was gunned down.
Story posted April 1, 2007, by Jesse Tinsley
A 13-year-old boy shot and killed Friday in a parking lot on Cleveland’s East Side was an innocent bystander caught in the middle of a flurry of bullets, the boy’s mother said Sunday.
That contradicts the police theory that Terrance Allen may have been the target of what authorities consider a gang-related shooting.
But Monique Allen said her son was not in a gang. On Friday she said Terrance was among a group of friends in the parking lot at East 79th Street and Superior Avenue around 2:15 p.m. when a man drew a gun and began firing.
Terrance, shot once in the back, was taken to Rainbow Babies & Children Hospital where he died around 10 p.m.
Witnesses described the shooter as a black male in his early to mid-20s. They told police the man fired several rounds from a large silver handgun and fled.
Police are still investigating. No one has been arrested.
“What we gathered initially from the scene was that he was targeted,” said Lt. Thomas Stacho. “We don’t know for sure if that is the case, but that’s what we’re being told.”

*Editor’s Note: Now her children are left to suffer. Isn’t life the strangest thing? She went to build a makeshift memorial for a slain rapper that passed away only a week ago…and at HIS grave, she was gunned down? Tragic….
Original Article Found at News Day
PhotobucketNancy Williams of Brooklyn was supposed to be at a funeral yesterday, passing out buttons in memory of Leval “Cavlar” Lyde, the Bedford-Stuyvesant rapper she knew until his recent slaying.
Instead, the young mother’s family was preparing for her funeral, a day after she, too, was killed, shot dead by a stray bullet at a memorial for Lyde.
The remarkable twist of fate was not lost on mourners yesterday as they gathered in grief at the Stuyvesant Garden Houses, where Williams 27, lived and died.
“When you’re having a memorial for someone and someone else is killed, that’s past tragic,” said Geoffrey Davis, the head of an anti-violence program named for his brother, City Councilman James Davis, who was shot dead at City Hall in 2003. “This is a war zone. Where’s all the guns coming from? How do they have access to that?”
Williams, 27, had three children — Destiny, 10, Duvell, 8, and Winter, a 7-month-old fathered by her boyfriend, John Black, who lives in Dix Hills and had apparently planned to move her and the children out to his Long Island home.
“Him and Nancy got along great,” said Black’s mother, Patty Black. Williams was killed Sunday night. She was home with her children, her mother and grandmother, when she stepped out of her building on Gates Avenue to go to the grocery store.
First, however, she stopped at the memorial for Lyde, who lived in a building next store.
By then, the memorial had turned into an alcohol-fueled party, police said, and at some point there were several gunshots.
Williams was shot once in the chest and later died at Brookdale Medical Center.
Police late yesterday had not made any arrests or figured out what prompted the gunplay. The word on the street, however, was that a recently released convict took offense when someone stared at him. He then pulled out a gun.
“Then they pulled out their guns, shot at him and he shot back,” said Anthony Herbert, a member of the Central Brooklyn Youth Initiative. “Shared madness.”

*Editor’s Note: Were ‘gangsta rappers’ from back in the day correct when they shouted “F” the police? Police are suppose to be here to protect and serve, they are here to ensure that the law is upheld and that anything that goes against that principle is corrected through a certain judicial process. But some of these cops are getting carried away. It reminds me of the case of Amadou Diallo….HIGHLY unnecessary and further proof that officers are NOT going through the proper physical and mental training required to be an officer of the law. It seems as though anyone can be a cop these days…are they checking their mental states? Or does it just not matter, as long as the position is filled? I wonder…Nonetheless, let it be noted that I am in NO way promoting “bad” behavior. If a person poses a threat, I understand some level of restraint. I’m just left with a LOT of questions. That’s all.
Original Article Found at Washington Post
The D.C. police officer who fatally shot a 14-year-old boy in Southeast Washington on Monday night was off duty, out of uniform and acting on his own to find a minibike that he believed was stolen from his home, authorities said yesterday.
New details emerged about the killing of DeOnté Rawlings, who was shot in the head after he allegedly fired a gun at the officer and an off-duty colleague. But authorities were unable to answer a question that has raised a community outcry: If the youth had a gun, where is it?
No weapon was found, but the officer’s unmarked car has a bullet hole, and authorities said they found shell casings from a .45-caliber gun.
Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier’s explanation did little to satisfy family members and neighborhood residents. “Immediately after the shooting, there was a lot of chaos,” Lanier said. “It’s possible somebody picked the weapon up.”
Police officials said the trouble began after the officers, riding in a personal car, saw the youth on the minibike and confronted him. Last night, authorities said they did not have the motorized bike. Like the gun, police speculated, it must have been taken from the scene before the area was secured.
The shooting took place about 7:30 p.m. Monday in the 600 block of Atlantic Street SE, in the Condon Terrace public housing complex, and soon drew a crowd protesting the police action. At first, the details were sketchy. As more information was provided, doubts persisted.
